Submarine Mystery Questions of the Week - 11-18-2009

1) What is the full name and hull number of the sub shown above?
2) What kind of submarine is it?
3) Besides the pictured sub's unusually beefy sail and rudder, and the alternative location of her bow planes, what else depicted in this photo is certainly striking?

It's the brandy spankin' new British Astute Class SSN, HMS Astute (S119).

As for the "unusual" feature of the boat visible in the photograph, it appears that there are people in both the forward and aft ends of the sail. Probably a lookout station. But its hard to tell due to the poor quality of the photo.
