New Category for Navy Ship Naming

The Navy is expected to name a cargo ship under construction in San Diego after labor activist Cesar Chavez. Chavez served in the Navy during World War II, enlisting in 1944.

Chávez later described his experience in the military as “the two worst years of my life.”[5]

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is expected make a formal announcement Wednesday. With the 2012 elections upon the administration, what better way (obscenely obvious) is theirs to court the coveted hispanic vote?


Not everyone is happy about this capricious choice, which breaks longstanding naming traditions for Navy ships. If the current administration is re-elected, Navy veterans may surely expect a submarine (SSBN/SSN) to eventually be named USS Barbara Boxer or USS Nancy Pelosi, for instance.
