The Submarine Service - A Relatively Small World

Once, there were about 4,000 officers and 37,000 enlisted submariners, a small fraction of the entire, active Navy at the time.

The first time I saw my best bud in over two years, although we had both been homeported in the same New London squadron, was over in Naples. SSNs as you know, are gone a lot. It really makes the world seem smaller when that happens.

This is not us in the photo. These guys do look familiar, but don't know them. Does anyone even recognize the boat? The nationality? ....Going knee deep.

I believe the one on the periscope is Russian Commodore Joel Bubbleheadski on the K-23 Jimmy Khrushchev. The Sub was named after Ukrainian peasant beet farmer and politico. I don’t know who the guy on the sound powered phones is but, I think he is trying to explain to the CO why the scope is up while they’re at 500 meters.

Hey! They have a ship’s clock on the starboard side just like mine, what are the chances?

Bubblehead, I asked myself the same thing when I found this photo.
Had been uncertain it was even you until Lubber mentioned it and you confirmed - you are joking, right?
Thought the red thing might be attached to the periscope stand.

Do not know if the shot is even real or from some movie set. It is supposed to be a 'type 227' boat, whatever that is/was, but what are the uniforms - Swedish, Polish, Russian? If we knew who to ask, we could find out what that red thing was.

Nice hat! ...Going knee deep

You know, it shouldn't take a skimmer (in training no less) to tell you guys what this is ... it's the control room of a typhoon-class Soviet/Russian SSBN. The uniforms are definitely Russian and I'm pretty sure I've seen this image is a screen capture from some video released by the Russian navy a few years ago.

Skimmer, thank you so much for your positive ID. Now, we may be able to learn what that red thing is that Bubblhead mentioned.

Skimmer has IDed Bubblehead is a Russian "Boomer girl" and on a go slow Typhoon pig no less. This former T-hull sailor is seriously considering stopping his subscription to "The Stupid Shall Be Punished";-)

Seriously the hardware is Russian, I've cleaned enough gages and panels on the Russian Juliett in Providence RI to see that. The red crotch guard thing, No Clue.
