Mafia accused of sinking ship full of radioactive waste off Italy

A robot submarine was used to inspect a shipwreck which a Mafia turncoat claims was sunk with some 100 barrels of radioactive waste. Authorities have been unable to identify the hull, because the name has either been scraped over or is obscured by algae.

Former mobster, Francesco Fonti, claims the 360ft-long ship is one of dozens sunk by the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta syndicate. Fonti told authorities he used explosives to sink them nearly 20 miles off Calabria in 1992.

Fonti claims involvement in the sinking of three vessels, and that the 'Ndrangheta made millions of pounds illegally dumping radioactive and other toxic waste from businesses in Italy and other parts of Europe.
