Obviously, the electro-mechanical Robonaut pictured above appears a relatively poor match for a humanoid robot in 2011. Recall TOPIO, the bipedal humanoid robot designed to play table tennis against a human being that was developed by a robotics firm in Vietnam, for instance. Why has NASA chosen such a poor specimen?

For starters, TOPIO and his ilk do not have to pass NASA's rigorous Electromagnetic (EMI)Interference/Compatibility Tests for operation on an actual space station as Robonaut seems to have passed.
